BUCKWHEAT Raw Honey 500G GLASS
Our most popular variety has returned, Buckwheat.
Buckwheat honey is a highly nutritious and uniquely flavored honey made from the nectar of buckwheat flowers. Buckwheat, despite its name, is not related to wheat but is actually a fruit seed that’s closely related to rhubarb and sorrel, making it a suitable substitute for grains for people who are sensitive to wheat or other grains that contain protein gluten.
This type of honey is distinctive for several reasons:
- Color and Consistency: Buckwheat honey is much darker than most other honey varieties, ranging from dark purple to black. Its thick consistency is closer to molasses than the light, fluid texture of traditional honeys.
- Flavor: The flavor of buckwheat honey is strong, robust, and earthy, with malty tones and a slightly bitter aftertaste. Its intense flavor makes it less likely to be used as a sweetener in teas or on toast but highly valued for use in baking, marinades, and other recipes where its bold taste can stand out or complement other flavors.
- Nutritional Value: Buckwheat honey is particularly rich in antioxidants, including phenolic compounds that are beneficial for health. It is known for its higher antioxidant content compared to lighter honeys, contributing to its reputation as a healthful choice. It has been suggested to offer benefits such as improved heart health, wound healing, and potentially even antioxidant support that can reduce the risk of certain diseases.
- Medicinal Uses: Due to its potent antibacterial properties and higher antioxidant content, buckwheat honey is often sought for medicinal uses. It’s traditionally used to treat sore throats and coughs and is considered effective in cough suppression, making it a natural remedy during cold and flu season.
Buckwheat honey’s unique characteristics make it a specialty honey with a specific audience who appreciate its distinct flavor profile and health benefits. Its production is less common than that of lighter honeys, primarily because buckwheat flowers for a shorter period, and not all regions cultivate buckwheat, making this type of honey a more rare and sought-after product.
